This relief in Žasliai honors pianist and composer Leopoldas Godovskis (born Žasliai, February 13, 1870; died New York, November 21, 1938), known as "the Buddha of the piano" for his unmatched left-hand technique. He left Žasliai as a toddler after his physician father died in an epidemic, toured internationally from age 9, studied under Camille Saint-Saëns, directed the piano department of Chicago Musical College from 1890, and led a master class at the Vienna Academy of Music from 1909 to 1914, composing roughly 400 works. A planned 1935 visit to his hometown was blocked by tense Polish-Lithuanian relations over Vilnius.
