A church is believed to have stood in Žasliai since around 1460. The current brick church was built 1897-1902 by parish priest Kazimieras Kibelis with parishioners. During Easter 1905 a brawl broke out in the churchyard between Polish- and Lithuanian-speaking parishioners over the language of Mass, and in 1915 wartime shelling punched two holes in the walls, damaged the towers, and shattered all the windows; bullet marks are still visible on the west wall. On March 25, 1944, future Cardinal Vincentas Sladkevičius held his first Mass here, and in 1926 Bishop Juozapas Kukta's installation took place here because construction of Kaišiadorys Cathedral was not yet finished.
