Teofilius Matulionis was born June 22, 1873 in Kudoriškis village, Molėtai district, and died August 20, 1962 in Šeduva; he is buried in Kaišiadorys Cathedral. He served as archbishop and administrator of the Kaišiadorys diocese and was later beatified, his chosen motto "Per kryžių į žvaigždes" ("Through the cross to the stars") reflecting his pastoral mission of proclaiming hope of salvation through Christ's death and resurrection. This monument was created in 1999 at the initiative of Kaišiadorys Bishop Juozas Matulaitis, by sculptor Vladas Žuklys and architect Stasys Petrauskas.
