In the first half of the 20th century, the cathedral grounds were enclosed by a stone wall with an ornate gate at the front, echoing the cathedral's main-facade decoration. Under Soviet rule, with Bishop Teofilius Matulionis barred from his duties, the cathedral fell dormant, and in 1966 the wall and gates were demolished. New gates were only rebuilt in 1992 after Lithuania regained independence, this time a metal-rod fence rather than stone, with simpler, unplastered gates in a sympathetic style; the current fence and gates date to around 1997, designed by architect Brunonas Bakaitis.
