Žemaičių muziejus "Alka" in Telšiai is a state cultural institution, officially founded on 16 February 1932 (first efforts date back to 1923). It holds archaeology and art collections, an open-air ethnographic village museum, a religious heritage exhibit at the Bishop's Palace in Varniai, and the Rainiai Suffering Chapel, commemorating the 1941 tragedy. The museum preserves over 2,000 old books in the Samogitian dialect.
