Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant is unique in the Baltic Sea region for its operating principle, using two water reservoirs, an upper and lower basin. Its units pump water from the Kaunas Reservoir up to the upper basin, 100 meters above the reservoir's water level, when grid load is low and cheap surplus power is available, then run as a conventional hydroelectric plant during the day when demand rises and the upper basin is full. Construction began in 1984, and the fourth and final unit came online in 1998.
