Carmelite monks, invited to the town in the 17th century by its founder Bishop Jurgis Radvila, built this brick church between 1781 and 1783 on the site of an earlier 17th-century chapel and wooden church. Constructed in the late Baroque style with Classicist touches, it originally stood without towers until priest Juozapas Marma added them in 1870. The building has survived repeated disasters, including a 1803 town fire, artillery shelling in 1914, and a 1944 attack that brought down its roof and towers, each time being rebuilt.
