Paminklas Vytautui Dižiajam

Graži vieta, Marijampolės apskritis

Near the bridge over the Širvinta river in Kudirkos Naumiestis stands a monument to Grand Duke Vytautas, raised around 1930-1931 during Lithuania's nationwide commemorations marking 500 years since his death. It replaced an earlier German-built victory monument on the same spot from the First World War, at what was then a border crossing between Lithuania proper and East Prussia, a route historically used by book smugglers moving banned Lithuanian-language print across the border. Soviet authorities tore the monument down, and it was rebuilt and rededicated in 1990 after Lithuania regained independence.
