Apuolės hillfort

Graži vieta, Klaipėdos apskritis

Apuolė is the first place within present-day Lithuania mentioned in written sources, and one of the largest and best-known Curonian strongholds - in the 9th century it was the political, military and economic centre of the Ceklis land. In 853, Swedish king Olaf's Vikings besieged the fort for nine days without success; around 70 Scandinavian arrowheads have been found in the rampart. The Curonians eventually made peace, paying half a pound of silver per person.
