Žiežmarių istorinis centras

Graži vieta, Kauno apskritis

Žiežmariai was the only town in Kaišiadorys district to have its own town hall, which stood in the central square in the 18th century. The area was already fairly densely settled from the 16th-17th centuries, and archaeological research shows the town had expanded toward the more distant parts of Vilniaus gatvė by the late 16th or early 17th century, influenced by the old Vilnius-Kaunas road running through it. Only from the late 18th and 19th century did settlement spread further to Ažubalio, Šiaurės and Žaslių streets, with Vilniaus gatvė itself also densifying. The central square holds the district's only Freedom Monument, oriented toward St. James's church, with a wooden synagogue nearby.
