Pagėgių koncentracijos stovykla Buchenvaldo Filialas Oflager 53

Graži vieta, Tauragės apskritis

This forested site north of Pagėgiai marks the location of Oflag 53, a Buchenwald sub-camp opened in 1941 that held Soviet Red Army prisoners of war in open-air conditions on roughly 36 hectares of former sandpit land. Historians estimate that between 10,000 and 30,000 prisoners died there from starvation, cold, and disease before the camp ceased operating in the early to mid 1940s. A memorial complex by sculptor Steponas Šarapovas and architect Gediminas Baravykas was dedicated in 1977, and in 2005 the Lithuanian state added a black stone monument by Vytautas Mockus and Jonas Jankus incorporating a gravure by artist Stasys Krasauskas. Only fragmentary wall remains survive among the forest growth today, and the site functions solely as a memorial to the victims, not as a recreational destination.
