Rambynas

Apžvalgos vieta, Tauragės apskritis

Rambynas is a hill on the right bank of the Nemunas River near Bitėnai, the end of the Vilkyškiai ridge formed roughly 14,000 years ago as glaciers retreated. It was a sacred site of the Baltic Scalvian (Skalviai) tribe, and in 1276 the Teutonic Knights attacked and destroyed the Scalvian hillfort of Ramigė that stood on it. In the 19th and 20th centuries the hill became a symbol of Lithuanian identity in Lithuania Minor, closely tied to publisher and activist Martynas Jankus, called the 'patriarch of Lithuania Minor,' who lived and printed the Lithuanian press in nearby Bitėnai and is buried at the foot of the hill.
