This hillfort in Kandava, rising about 68 meters above sea level, is known locally as the Knights' Castle Mound because a Livonian Order castle once stood here. Construction of the order's castle began in 1254 under masters Eberhard von Seine and Burkhard von Hornhausen, and by 1312 the site served as the seat of a district judge before being enlarged in 1334. The castle fell into disuse after around 1750, and its surviving stone tower is nicknamed the Powder Tower for storing gunpowder in the time of Duke Jacob. A scaled-down model of the original castle, built in 2010, now stands at the foot of the mound.
