Juliaus Janonio aikštė

Graži vieta, LT

Juliaus Janonio aikštė in Biržai occupies the site of the town's former Market Square, which hosted a livestock market and rows of small shops and workshops until fighting in the summer of 1944 destroyed this part of the city. In 1976 the square was formed around a monument to poet Julius Janonis: a 3.5-meter bronze figure by sculptor K. Bogdanas on an 8.5-meter pedestal designed by architect V. Brėdikis, meant to evoke a candle flickering in the wind as a symbol of the poet's short life. The square was reconstructed in 2023 with new seating and rest areas, along with a musical fountain that performs on the hour.
