Kriaučiaus akmuo

Graži vieta, Šiaulių apskritis

Resting on a hill in Vileikiai village, Kelmė district, this glacial erratic ranks as the third-largest boulder known in Lithuania, measuring 7.84 by 7.65 meters and standing over 4 meters tall, with a horizontal girth of 23.2 meters and an estimated weight of 356 tons. Carried south from Fennoscandia by continental ice sheets, the biotite-garnet gneiss boulder lay mostly buried in a farmer's field until land reclamation workers unearthed it in 1974; in 1989 it was hauled onto higher ground using cables and anchors borrowed from an oil refinery. It takes its name, the Tailor's Stone, from Petras Jasulaitis, a local tailor nicknamed Kriaučius, and it has been protected as a geological natural monument since 2000.
