Nepriklausomybės aikštė

Graži vieta, Kauno apskritis

Known officially as Nepriklausomybės gynėjų aikštė, Independence Defenders' Square, this central plaza in Raseiniai has been a built-up commercial and administrative area since the 19th century, once home to the district administration and the town's first cinema, all destroyed at the start of World War II. Under Soviet rule it was called Victory Square, and it only received its present name in 1995 after Lithuania regained independence. A reconstruction in 2018 gave the square its current form, and in 2019 two monuments were added honoring Jonas Žemaitis-Vytautas and Petras Bartkus-Žadgaila, signatories of the February 16, 1949 declaration of the Lithuanian postwar partisan movement.
