Built on the site of the old Nemakščiai church from stones gathered in surrounding fields and funded by local residents, whose names are recorded on a memorial plaque, this grotto marks the 150th anniversary of the Virgin Mary's apparition at Lourdes and the 400th anniversary of her apparition at Šiluva.
