This spring sits beside Aronas hillfort, a Late Iron Age site on the Ārone streambank near Bērzaune parish. In May 2017 visitors discovered its outlet had been deliberately blocked centuries earlier with a cut pine log, later dendrochronologically dated to 1406. The spring behaves as an artesian source, so its temperature and flow stay constant year-round, and in winter the collected water freezes into an ice fountain that can build up to the height of a multi-storey building.
