Renavo piliakalnis

Graži vieta, Žemaitija

Renavo piliakalnis stands on a raised bend of the Varduva river, now a reservoir, a short walk east of the Renavas manor gardens off the road connecting Židikai and Renavas. Its triangular platform measures about 10 by 15 meters and originally rose some 10 meters above the surroundings, though it has eroded to roughly 5.5 meters today, with a rampart 2 meters high and 18 meters wide encircled by a moat 7 meters wide and 1 meter deep. Excavations in 1906, 1966, and 1972 uncovered a clay built mound reinforced with stones, along with animal bones, crude pottery, and a layer of burned wood, dating the hillfort's use to the first millennium CE.
