Palapainės piliakalnis

Graži vieta, Kauno apskritis

This hillfort on the left-bank promontory of the Lapainia river, also known as Lapainia or Vilūnai, has had its original plateau washed away by the river since the 19th-20th century; what remains is a 17-meter rampart with a ditch behind it and steep 15-meter slopes, reinforced with stone gabions in 1994 to stop further erosion. A 1.3-hectare open settlement site at its foot has yielded striated and rough-surfaced pottery dated to the first through early second millennium. Local legend attributes the mound's construction to French soldiers.
