Peace Park

Graži vieta, Marijampolės apskritis

Ramybės parkas (Park of Peace) sits on a hilltop above the Šešupė River in Marijampolė, on the site where victims tortured and killed by Soviet authorities between 1944 and 1953 were secretly buried in gravel pits. The park was created in 1990 during Lithuania's Rebirth, with wooden crosses and memorial chapels designed by architect Valentinas Medelis and built by sculptors Jonas Dulinskas, Romas Karpavičius, Kazimieras Barišauskas, and Ričardas Vainas. Its elevated position also gives visitors wide sunset views over the river valley, and a memorial ceremony is held there every June 14th.
