Skulptūra deivei Velionei

Graži vieta, Tauragės apskritis

Created by sculptor Erikas Daulis and installed in 2010, this sculpture honors the pagan goddess Veliona, the deity after whom the town of Veliuona is named. It depicts the goddess as though arriving by boat, a vessel symbolically connecting past and present, life and the afterlife, carrying trees whose roots pierce through the hull to represent another form of existence. In pre-Christian Lithuanian belief, Veliona and the spirits dwelling underground were thought to influence soil fertility and the reproduction of animals.
