Veliuonos piliakalnių kompleksas

Graži vieta, Tauragės apskritis

This complex comprises two hillfort mounds from the 13th-15th centuries. Gediminas Hill, with 30-meter slopes and a 25x54 m rectangular platform surrounded by earthworks, is identified as the site of Junigėda (later Veliuona) Castle, built in 1291 and rebuilt after repeated destructions; local legend holds that Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania died here, commemorated by a monument erected in 1925, and a 1912 excavation uncovered burnt building remains, artifacts, weapons and tools across roughly 1,000 square meters. Ramybės Hill lies just west of it, with similarly steep slopes and a larger 150x40 m platform. Both mounds are protected as nationally significant archaeological monuments.
