Siponių outcrop

Apžvalgos vieta, Alytaus apskritis

Rising about 35 meters above the Nemunas and stretching some 600 meters along the riverbank, Siponių atodanga is one of several protected outcrops lining the river near Siponys village, in Birštonas municipality, within the Nemunas Loops Regional Park. Its exposed cross-section is unusual among the park's outcrops because it consists almost entirely, 80 to 90 percent, of moraine loam left behind by glaciers, along with layers of sand, gravel and clay from the Quaternary period. The site was declared a geological natural monument in 1997 and now lies within the Siponiai landscape reserve. It is best viewed from the water, since boat trips along the Nemunas pass directly beneath the exposed bank.
