Sukiniai Mound

Graži vieta, Panevėžio apskritis

Known locally as Pilaitė, this hillfort rises above the right bank of the Žuvintė stream about 500 meters west of Sukiniai village, in the Šventoji river valley, Ukmergė district. Its oval plateau measures roughly 37 by 30 meters and is bounded by an earthen rampart up to 3 meters high, with slopes reaching 30 meters and traces of a defensive ditch. Archaeologist Petras Tarasenka surveyed the site in 1921 and 1936, and the Lithuanian History Institute followed in 1970, recovering pottery shards and stone paving that date the fort to the early second millennium.
