Water Source

Graži vieta, Panevėžio apskritis

Locally known as Žuvintės (or Sugedos) šaltinis, this spring emerges on the left bank of the Šventoji River in Sukiniai village, Ukmergė district, close to where the Žuvintė and Sugeda streams meet. Only about a meter across, it hides an unusual 'bottomless' structure: beneath 30 centimeters of clear, iron-tinged water lies a churning emulsion of gray sand and water that extends 5 meters deep or more. Declared a protected hydrogeological natural monument in 1985, the spring most likely did not form naturally at all: geologists trace it to an improperly sealed 700 to 800 meter borehole drilled in 1981-1983 by the Soviet company Soyuzburgaz while surveying the area for an underground gas storage facility.
