Graži vieta, Vilniaus apskritis
Medininkai Castle is one of Lithuania's largest defensive castles, built in the 14th century near the present-day border with Belarus. Its four-cornered layout with massive corner towers guarded an important route to Vilnius. On July 31, 1991, near the castle at the Medininkai border post, Soviet OMON forces killed seven Lithuanian customs and police officers - an event that became one of the most painful episodes of the independence-restoration period. The castle now houses an exhibition on its defensive architecture.
