Jūrmalciems Beach

Paplūdimys, Kurzeme

The beach at Jūrmalciems lies on the open Baltic Sea coast in Nīca parish, part of South Kurzeme Municipality, about 10 kilometers from the parish center. The shoreline is part of a longer stretch of coast noted for pebble beaches, patches of white shells, and old wooden piers once used to moor fishing boats, one of which still stands near the village. Jūrmalciems grew up as a fishing settlement and was granted official village status in 1932, and the sea remains central to its character alongside a coastal observation point and a radio beacon nearby. The area saw heavy fighting in the Second World War because of its position near the Courland Pocket front line.
