Žvainių Gaidžio koplyčia

Apžvalgos vieta, Klaipėdos apskritis

This hexagonal neogothic chapel of red brick was built in 1935 on Gaidžio hill near Žvainiai, replacing an earlier wooden chapel on the same site. Inside stands a granite altar inscribed Ave Maria and wall frescoes painted by artist Vaidotas Žukas, added when sculptor Vilius Orvidas restored the building ahead of its 1988 reconsecration. Local legend holds that the hill takes its name from a rooster whose midnight crowing frightened passersby until the first chapel was raised there.
