Twenty-eight burial mounds make up the Padukštų cemetery, found by Vievis forestry workers on the left bank of the Neris River inside Neris Regional Park, facing the ancient Karmazinai settlement across the water. Archaeologists date the site to the sixth and seventh centuries, and excavations turned up cremated warrior burials ringed with stone curbs, in one mound three rings stacked on top of each other, along with the grave of a young girl. Researchers connect the mounds to the hillfort communities of Karmazinai, Buivydiškiai, and Bradeliškiai, whose dead were buried facing west, echoing the old Baltic belief that the land of the dead lay where the sun sets. The site is now marked with an information sign and a footpath for visitors.
