Trikātas pilskalns

Apžvalgos vieta, Vidzeme

This hillfort rises on a high riverbank promontory in the center of Trikāta, wedged between Trikāta Lake to the east and the Abula River to the south and southwest. Its roughly triangular plateau measures about 209 by 162 meters and sits close to 30 meters above the lake, with defensive ditches still visible despite partial overgrowth. Archaeologists have linked the site to the ancient Latgalian stronghold of Beverīna, first named in Henry of Livonia's chronicle as the seat of Tālivaldis, elder of Tālava, who was killed there in 1215. Around 1284 the Livonian Order built a stone castle on the same ground, later destroyed during the Great Northern War, and a roughly 2-meter-high wall section plus tower fragments still stand at the summit, where cultural events are now held on an open-air stage.
