Žygis, Kurzeme
Tucked into the oldest protected section of Slītere National Park, closed to visitors for decades before reopening, this 1.2 km trail in Dundaga parish can only be walked with a local guide. It crosses old broadleaf and spruce forest with large trees and ravines, then a limestone fen bog and a wet black-alder grove, following the line of an ancient Baltic Sea coastline that once bordered this stretch of Kurzeme. The bog and forest along the route shelter a number of rare and endangered plant and animal species protected under EU biotope rules.
