Tucked into a forest ravine within Slītere National Park, Zārtapu ūdenskritums drops about 2.2 meters over a ledge only 0.4 to 0.6 meters wide, a modest scale that belies its geological significance. The cascade itself formed during the 20th century when the Zārtapu stream was artificially straightened, but it now exposes some of the oldest rocks known in Latvia: reddish-brown and bluish-grey Middle Devonian sandstone roughly 385 million years old. The surrounding gorge, protected as the geological and geomorphological monument Zārtapu grava, stretches about 300 meters with valley walls 10 to 15 meters deep and even preserves ancient petroglyphs carved into the rock.
