Žemaičių Kalvarija (the Samogitian Calvary) is one of Lithuania's most important Catholic pilgrimage sites. A Way of the Cross built here in the 17th century consists of 20 chapels representing the stations of Christ's Passion - a papal privilege allows walking it as a spiritual equivalent to a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. The sanctuary is also known for its icon of Our Lady of Žemaičių Kalvarija, considered miraculous. Every August, the Assumption Day (Žolinė) indulgence feast draws thousands of pilgrims from across Lithuania.
