dabas liegums „Zilaiskalns”

Vieta, Vidzeme

Rising 66.6 meters above the surrounding plain to an absolute elevation of 126.6 meters, Zilaiskalns is the highest hill in northwestern Vidzeme and the centerpiece of a 117.71-hectare nature reserve established in 2004 near Kocēni, Valmiera municipality. Beyond its ecological value, protecting slope and ravine woodlands with oak and ash stands, the hill carries deep cultural significance: it was declared a state-protected archaeological monument in 1998 for its cult site and medieval burial ground, and recognized as a local sacred site in 2006. A 3.5-kilometer circular trail winds around its slopes, drawing both domestic and international visitors.
