This Orthodox church in Kolainiai began as a Carmelite convent church, was converted into the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord in 1867, and became home to the Kolainiai Icon of the Mother of God "Smolenskaja" parish in 1873. Briefly returned to Catholic use after 1922 as a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Queen of Mount Carmel, it reverted to Orthodox use given the area's large Orthodox population; by 1937 its parish counted 1,753 believers, and in 1940 a church was consecrated in a wooden residential building.
