Walking paths encircle this small lake in the center of Valmiera, at the foot of the medieval Zilie Bastioni fortification, where water mills operated from the 17th century until they were demolished in 1937. The reservoir was originally built as part of the town's defense system, dammed together with the Rātsupīte stream to raise water levels whenever the city came under threat. A 2008 renovation added viewing platforms, benches, a lit fountain, a children's playground and a sundial sculpture by Matīss Jansons, "Saules pulkstenis."
