Ukru gāršas - Mežvidu trail

Žygis, Zemgale

This 2 kilometer nature trail, opened at the end of 2018, runs through the Ukru gārša nature reserve, a gārša-type forest that is unusual for Latvia and rich in ancient oaks, ash, and linden trees. Walking the route, sometimes guided by a local forest warden, visitors can learn about the reserve's characteristic wildlife and plant communities. The surrounding protected area was established in 1999, covers roughly 1121 hectares across the Bukaiši and Ukri parishes of Dobele Municipality, and holds Natura 2000 status for its nesting black storks and lesser spotted eagles. It is also registered as a specially protected nature territory under Latvian law.
