One of the seven earliest parishes in Samogitia, established by Grand Duke Vytautas in 1421 following Samogitia’s baptism, though the original wooden church has not survived. A stone church was built under Lithuanian Chancellor Albrecht Stanisław Radziwiłł, completed by 1642 and consecrated in 1644, then significantly reworked in the late 17th century under Grand Hetman Michał Kazimierz Pac, who added a raised tower with cupola, iron cross and a statue of the Virgin Mary. Damaged during World War I, it was restored across several 19th-20th century phases, including work by artist Petras Kalpokas in 1921, with the first phase of a foundation-and-facade restoration completed in autumn 2016; interior highlights include a 17th-century painting of Christ crowned with thorns and a circa-1650 epitaph for John Casimir Bzostowski.
