In Kelmė's civil cemetery stands the grave memorial of Vladas Putvinskis-Pūtvis (1873-1929), founder of the Lithuanian Riflemen's Union. Though he had asked for only a simple marker shaped like a rifleman's emblem, his sister Marija Žmuidzinavičienė, wife of the painter Antanas Žmuidzinavičius, had this more lasting monument erected in the spring of 1959 to preserve his memory.
