Migonių hillfort

Graži vieta, Kauno apskritis

This hillfort on a promontory of the Kruona River's left bank has an oval plateau 9.5 by 16 meters, ringed by a rampart with an outer ditch. A 1.5-hectare settlement surrounds its base, excavated in 1954-1957, yielding hearths, post-holes, a bronze bracelet, a Roman coin, pottery, clay spindle whorls and iron tools. Its cultural layer, up to 2.8 meters thick, shows 10 distinct occupation horizons, and the rampart was built in four phases, the first with a wooden palisade that burned before being raised twice more. A 4th-5th century barrow cemetery lies 250 meters to the northeast, also excavated in this period. The site is dated to the first millennium through the early second millennium.
