Dzirnavkalns

Graži vieta, Kurzeme

Rising 87 meters, this hill in Talsi was an ancient Curonian cult site before the Livonian Order built a stone castle on it in the 13th century, last mentioned in records in 1636. Dutch-style windmills later stood on its flattened summit until they burned down around 1921, giving the hill its name, since ‘dzirnavas’ means mill, and the site subsequently held the Villa Heyking residence built by Baroness Emīlija Katrīna von Heikinga. Today it serves as a panoramic viewpoint over Vilkmuižas Lake, Talsi’s town square, and the surrounding neighborhoods, reached via the old cobblestone Kalna iela.
