Graži vieta, Latgale
This hillfort occupies the high point of Upursala, a crescent-shaped island of about 16 hectares in Lake Cirīša, roughly one kilometer north of Aglona in Latgale. The fortified ridge rises about 20 meters above the lake, measuring 61 by 46 meters with a leveled summit platform of about 32 by 18 meters, plus two terraces and an earthen rampart on its gentler northern slope. Archaeologist J. Urtāns excavated the site in 1977 and confirmed it shows the hallmarks of a genuine ancient hillfort, including a cultural layer and traces of settlement dating from the first millennium BCE into the first millennium CE. Despite a name that translates as sacrifice island, excavation found no direct evidence of cult or sacrificial use, and the site was given protected monument status in 2003.
