Fort IV is one of the original forts of the Kaunas Fortress, built between 1882 and 1889 in the Rokai area on the upper terrace of the Nemunas River's left bank. It was considered one of the most creatively engineered of the fortress's first forts, gaining unique four-story counter-scarp gun-lifting casemates during an 1893 modernization. Its garrison destroyed the fort's ammunition magazines while retreating during World War I, and during the Nazi occupation in World War II its grounds were used as a killing site for Jewish victims; it later served Soviet military units, including as a storage depot and shooting range for the 108th Airborne Regiment. Today it is managed as part of the Kaunas Fortress Park and is open to visitors.
