Sitting between the Bartuva and Luoba rivers, Skuodas has a rich Jewish heritage reaching back to the 17th century, with distinct old and new town sections. During the interwar period it was a significant commercial hub with 204 trading enterprises, including six shoemaking companies producing 5,000 to 6,000 pairs a year, alongside banking, judicial, postal and industrial infrastructure. The town is registered in Lithuania's immovable cultural property registry.
