Aukštupėnai hillfort (also called Kupiškis hillfort) lies north of Kupiškis, on the left bank of the Lėvuo river at its confluence with the Aukštupys stream. Its oval platform measures 110 by 40 m and was plowed over in the 19th century; on the northeastern and southern slopes, a rampart about 280 m long and 1.8 m high survives. In ancient times this was the southernmost territory of the Selonians, a Baltic tribe. The hillfort is believed to have held a wooden community fortress-refuge - the earliest beginning of the future town - destroyed around 1240 during the Livonian Order's first campaigns.
