The Gates of Dawn are the only surviving gate of the nine original gates in Vilnius' city defensive wall, built in the early 16th century. A chapel above the gate houses the icon of Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn, Mother of Mercy, considered miraculous and venerated by both Catholics and Orthodox Christians. The site is one of Lithuania's most important pilgrimage destinations, drawing worshippers from around the world every year.
