A preserved steam locomotive, engine SU 251-98, stands as a monument beside the railway station on Jaama puiestee in Valga. Built in 1949 at the Sormovo shipyard, the 87-ton engine was capable of producing 12 tons of steam per hour before its retirement and installation here as a monument in 1998. Its unveiling marked the 110th anniversary of the Pihkva-Valga-Riga railway line, opened in July 1889, which made Valga a key junction on what is now the Estonian-Latvian border.
