Salduvės hillfort

Graži vieta, Šiaulių apskritis

Salduvė hillfort (also known as Šiauliai or Žuvininkai hillfort) sits about 5 km from central Šiauliai, with a circular platform roughly 20 m across, ringed by earthen ramparts and a ditch 1-4 m deep. Its strong fortifications suggest it was used for defense during the final period of wooden hillfort castles (11th-14th centuries), though it may have served throughout the entire first millennium. According to legend, the hill's name comes from the word "saldus" (sweet) - a Šiauliai duke reportedly lived here with his beloved, and the god Perkūnas struck them both down for not being married.
