Plungės bažnyčios varpinė

Graži vieta, Telšių apskritis

Standing at the southeast corner of the St. John the Baptist church grounds on Vytauto gatvė, this three-story brick tower was raised around 1849-1850 using funds from Count Aleksandras Zubovas, replacing an earlier wooden belfry. Its most prized bell was cast in 1646 in Vilnius by Jonas Brutenius and cracked long ago, so it no longer rings, while four working bells donated in 2001 by German canon Gerhard Lange, cast in Bochum in 1949, are used today. In 1861 the manifesto abolishing serfdom was read from its balcony, and the tower has held protected monument status since 1971.
